Beer Hiking Virginia, North Carolina and DC

A guide to the best hikes and microbreweries around DC, Virginia and North Carolina

Beer lovers and hiking enthusiasts, these 40 Old Dominion and Tar Heel State hikes are for you! Each carefully selected hike leads you through a stunning natural landscape and ends near a brewery or a brewpub where a local craft beer awaits you! This full-color guidebook features the best one- to sixhour beer hikes around the mountains, lakes, battlefields, rails-to-trails, and coasts of Virginia and North Carolina. It guides you from the top of North Carolina’s Grandfather Mountain to the swamps of Cape Fear estuary, and from Virginia's Eastern Shore to the rolling pastures of Shenandoah Valley. Each trail description includes details on access, difficulty, duration, points of interest, and, at trail's end, a recommended beer, with notes on its appearance, aroma, and taste. You’ll also get an inside look at the creative and passionate craftspeople behind the brewing process.

About the authors

English Knowles and Jim Knowles are siblings who grew up in the shadow of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. English has a passion for multi-day adventures and has completed treks around the world. She developed an interest in craft beer while working in the fermentation industry in California. English currently works as a Family Nurse Practitioner and splits her time between Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley and Chamonix, France. Jim got a taster for the combination of real ale and hillwalking while living in the Scottish Highlands in the early 1990s. He polished his palate on Czech pilsners while teaching in Prague. When not hiking, Jim teaches medieval and early modern literature in the English Department at North Carolina State University. He lives in Durham, NC with his wife and family of hikers.
