Who is Afraid of Onions?

A Graphic Novel About Phobias

Swiss graphic novelist Michaël LaMonnaie offers a unique blend of humor, heart, and psychology as he examines his own lifelong terror of onions. Told through a mix of fictional vignettes and poignant real-life testimonies, the book explores a wide range of anxiety disorders: agoraphobia, school phobia, arachnophobia, and even more surprising fears like bald people or long words.

Rather than mock or minimize these experiences, LaMonnaie offers empathy and understanding, using comedy as a lens to normalize the strange and scary things that live in our heads. Perfect for teens and adults alike, this is an essential, accessible look at mental health—one that makes you laugh, think, and maybe even feel a little less alone.

About the Author

Michaël LaMonnaie (real name Michaël Monney) is a Swiss comic artist, illustrator, and graphic designer. A graduate of ECAL in Fine Arts and HEAD in Visual Communication, he draws inspiration from the zany world of classic animated cartoons and Franco-Belgian comics—adding his own sharp, contemporary, and wildly humorous twist. His long-standing phobia of onions makes daily life a bit more complicated, but also fuels his creativity. He lives and works in Switzerland.
